Let’s Get to the Good Stuff

Top-Rated NJ Sex Therapist Emily Lambert Robins

Sex is an important part of a person's life.

It is often a vital part of a couple's relationship as well. However, when an individual or couple is experiencing issues in their sex life, it can often be a source of shame, embarrassment, and frustration.

Because of the shame and silence surrounding sexual issues, these issues are often not addressed by the individual or couple, which can lead to bigger problems and frustrations down the road. As a sex therapist, I am specially trained to assess and treat sexual problems for both individuals and couples.

Meet your New Jersey sex therapist

Emily Lambert Robins

Hi there! I'm Emily Lambert Robins, a Licensed Clinical Social Worker specializing in couples and sex therapy with over 10 years in private practice. My style is warm, engaging, and genuine—I believe therapy should be both meaningful and, yes, even fun!

Before becoming a therapist, I was actually an attorney, but I realized I was far more passionate about connecting with people on a deeper level than legal briefs.  While in law school, I also worked in the field of sexual health and advocacy, both at an organization in Washington, DC that helped sex workers, and also worked at a sex toy company.

Now, I help individuals and couples create more fulfilling intimate relationships through evidence-based approaches and an authentic, trusting therapeutic relationship.

  • Credentials: Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW), AASECT-Certified Sex Therapist, Certified Advanced Imago Relationship Therapist, Certified Imago Workshop Presenter

  • Clientele: Adults (individuals, couples, and polycules)

  • Location: New Jersey, New York, & Connecticut

  • Virtual therapy?: Yes

My approach to Sex Therapy

I am an AASECT Certified Sex Therapist and have received advanced sex therapy training at the University of Michigan's Sexual Health Certificate Program. I strive to create an environment that is safe, warm, and nonjudgmental, where individuals and couples can begin to talk about sex and sexual issues and get help

My approach to working with individuals and couples is multidimensional and holistic and may include outside referrals to medical doctors, readings and videos, and homework to be practiced at home. I use a biopsychosocial approach: doing a thorough assessment of a person's family/relationship history, past and current medical issues, emotional health, and current relationship dynamics.

FAQs about sex therapy

  • Absolutely! Think of sex therapy as an investment in your happiness and well-being. Many of my clients tell me they wish they'd come sooner instead of struggling alone for years. Not only can we work together to resolve those persistent sexual challenges, but the benefits often ripple out to improve your overall relationship, self-confidence, and emotional health. The relief of finally addressing these concerns can be truly life-changing.

  • If you're asking this question, you're probably sensing something could be better in your sex life—and that's a great first step! You might consider reaching out if you're experiencing challenges like:

    • Mismatched desires,

    • Physical discomfort during intimacy,

    • Performance concerns,

    • Sex is a source of stress and anxiety in your life, rather than a source of pleasure and connection

    • A major life change affecting your sexuality, and/or

    • Challenges in having conversations about sex with your partner(s).

Whatever the situation, you don't have to figure it out alone.

  • Working with me means a comfortable, judgment-free zone where we can talk openly about topics that might feel awkward elsewhere. Together, we'll explore what's happening, unpack patterns that aren't serving you, and build practical skills for better sexual connection.

I bring humor, compassion, and specialized expertise to our sessions, and while we'll talk directly about sex, remember that sex therapy never involves physical contact or observation of any sexual activity. Just honest conversation and real solutions.

  • Let me pull back the curtain a bit! In our sessions, we'll chat about your sexual concerns in a confidential, comfortable space. I might ask about your history, current challenges, and what you're hoping to achieve. Don't worry about having all the answers—that's what we'll discover together.

We'll develop strategies specifically for your situation, which might include education, communication exercises, or practical tools you can try between sessions. And yes, we can include your partner(s) when it makes sense for your goals.

  • Not at all! While I love working with couples and polycules, sex therapy is incredibly valuable for individuals, too. Whether you're single, dating, married, polyamorous, or in any relationship configuration, your sexual wellness matters.

Individual sessions can be perfect for exploring personal concerns, processing past experiences, working through body image issues, questioning sexual identity, or preparing for future relationships.

  • Are sex therapists covered by insurance?

As an out-of-network provider, I don't directly accept insurance plans, but many of my clients still get partial reimbursement. I'll provide detailed receipts (called superbills) that you can submit to your insurance company.

While there is an upfront investment, many clients find that the value of specialized sex therapy—the improved relationships, enhanced confidence, and greater joy—extends far beyond the financial cost. We can discuss options during our initial consultation.
